Are you Summer lawn ready?
This Winter has been tough on Marlborough lawns. Between the constant rain, chilly soil temperatures, and soggy patches, our backyards have been taking a beating. Grass growth slows right down, but the kids, pets, and foot traffic keep marching on. Leaving lawns thin, patchy, or compacted.
The good news? Spring is the perfect time for a complete lawn refresh. With warmer days ahead and plenty of moisture still in the ground, your lawn has the best chance to recover, regrow, and thrive before the summer heat hits.

Here’s how to give your lawn some spring TLC:
1. Dethatching – Give Your Lawn a Fresh Start
Over winter, dead grass, clippings, and organic matter can build up at the base of your lawn. This “thatch” layer stops water and nutrients from reaching the soil where your grass needs it most.
Dethatching is the process of removing that layer to promote new growth. Think of it like exfoliating your lawn clearing away the old so the new can push through.
Best done in mid-spring to early summer when your lawn is actively growing.
Use a dethatching rake or machine to lift and remove the build-up.
Once dethatched, your lawn will look a bit rough for a week or two but don’t panic, that’s normal.
Follow dethatching with fertiliser and a deep water to help nutrients penetrate right down to the root zone. This kickstarts recovery and fuels lush new growth.
After Marlborough’s exceptionally wet winter, many lawns are left compacted. Hard, squashed soil makes it nearly impossible for air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots which is why grass often looks dull or struggles to grow in heavy-use areas.
Aerating your lawn fixes this by removing small plugs of soil and creating space for root systems to breathe and absorb what they need.
Improves drainage (goodbye soggy patches).
Encourages deeper root growth.
Makes fertiliser and water more effective.
3. Overseeding & Repairing Bare Patches
Spring is also the best time to fix any thin or bare patches before the summer heat sets in. If left alone, those gaps will just become a playground for weeds.
How to repair patches:
Remove weeds and dead grass.
Loosen the soil with a rake or fork.
Sprinkle lawn mix over the area to create a soft seed bed.
Sow fresh lawn seed (choose a blend suited to Marlborough’s dry summers).
Water gently and regularly until established.
For lawns that are generally looking tired and thin, consider overseeding the entire lawn. This thickens it up, improves colour, and gives you a more resilient lawn heading into summer.
After dethatching, aerating, and overseeding, your lawn needs food and hydration.
Use a spring fertiliser that encourages strong root development and steady growth. We offer a local Tory Channel seaweed solution. Just dilute with water and spray over your lawns and then leave it to do it's magic without the use of harsh chemicals and sprays that are harmful to the environment and yourself.
Water deeply but less frequently – the goal is to soak the root zone, not just dampen the surface.
In Marlborough, spring can swing between wet weeks and sudden dry spells, so keep an eye on soil moisture and adjust watering as needed.
By putting in the work now, you’re setting your lawn up to handle the hot, dry Marlborough summer. Think of spring as your lawn’s reset button – aerate, feed, and repair now, and you’ll be rewarded with a green, resilient lawn that’s ready for BBQs, backyard cricket, and summer evenings outdoors.
